I've been in malaysia now since friday, and everything is going fine so far :) It's not like I expected, but that's not surprising.. perhaps surprising was that it's not all that hot :) It's very humid, but the heat is not as bad as it could be.

The food comes in rather small portions (and very cheap, around AU$0.70 each) and consists mostly of noodles and chilli..

Coffee is generally good, although cappucino is rare, and the only one i've tried so far was just filter coffee with foam on top :) The ice blended coffee is very nice however. Black coffee, tea, etc etc is also very nice. "Western" food is generally bad, although the cakes at Secret Recipe are excellent (including baked cheesecake).

The roads have one rule, which is that you stop at red lights. There are no other rules :) As many cars and motorbikes that can fit on a road will fit. Joining onto a road from a side road is a battle of wills, with the winner being the one that risks their car/bike to push in first. Changing lanes, entering roundabouts, etc etc is the same. Pedestrian crossings don't exist, so it's a good idea to look carefully and move fast when crossing roads.

Today and yesterday were spent in shopping malls, Prangin mall on saturday and Gurney plaza today. They each have 6-7 floors and huge numbers of shops, arranged more or less by floor (hairdressers on 4th floor, computers on 5th floor, etc etc. It's usual to have 5 or more stores of the same type side by side on one floor. Out where I'm staying I get a lot of strange looks, but in the malls I am mostly ignored :)

One of the interesting things is that when you enter a store you will be shadowed by a sales assistant. Lesley tells me that this is to make sure we don't steal anything. In one of the department stores I got followed all the way from microwaves over to the computers :)

That's all for tonight.. Tomorrow is going to be more shopping! But hopefully some other things as well..
