(I wrote this in a forum post, and decided it was interesting enough to archive here :) )

hmm.. (thinks) .. yes! Meaning has no meaning. We think it has meaning because we are human, and making things mean something is what we do. Like cats are hunters and fish are swimmers, we are meaning-makers.

If a cat sees a mouse, it chases it and eats it. If a human sees a mouse, he thinks "What is that? Let's call it a mouse. What do mice do?Are they good or bad? Why is there a mouse here? Should I do something?I think that mice are BAD because they are so small and scary! Maybe it'll bite me? Hey that mouse is very furry, why is it furry? What is the fur for? I wonder what the mouse is thinking? ..." and so on, while the mouse scurries around doing what mice do.

The cat hunts the mouse, while the human tries to find meaning in the mouse. Maybe the human will interpret the mouse as an omen.. or a symbol of something.. maybe they will think "That mouse means that the house is dirty". Or "That mouse means that we need to get a cat".

But there's no meaning in the mouse itself.. the meaning is all in us who apply our meanings onto the mouse.
