music: Eb, F# and A

Today I asked Mei Sin to help me with perfect pitch practice. I started out with just Eb and F#, but found that too easy, so I asked her to add A as well. So, she was playing Eb, F# and A over 4 octaves, and I was trying to name them.

After a while I realized that I was doing very badly. I couldn't recognize A at all, and was doing badly on Eb and F# too. So I finished the session and spent a few minutes listening to the notes. What seemed so easy a while back seemed very hard once again (it's been around 3 weeks since I stopped regular practice sessions).

But with time, and with relaxing my mind and allowing it to listen ("listening", as opposed to "listening for"), I started hearing the sounds again. And I was able to hear the distinct sound of A! So I'm happy now :) I will do some more sessions alone, just listening, before I try testing myself again. Testing is just a waste of time when my ear is not even perceiving pitch colour.

More to come soon! I am looking forward to the 4 note exercise! (Eb, F#, A, C), which I will start once I am confident with recognizing A.
